Water Damage – Classification and Categories

CLASSIFICATION OF WATER DAMAGE
There are four classifications of water damage from one to four. One is the smallest and four is the largest.
CLASS ONE – This is a small spot of a larger room. The area has minimal moisture and damage with little actual wet carpet and/or subflooring. This certainly needs cleaning and is best left to the professionals.
CLASS TWO – This represents a larger area and perhaps a full room. There will be water to the subfloor and possibly up the sides of the walls to 24 inches of water damage.
CLASS THREE – This is the largest amount of water that someone can see. Water often comes from overhead and fills the ceiling, walls, carpet and more. There is deep saturation of water.
CLASS FOUR – If you have ever seen a flooded basement, you know what Class Four damage looks like. This requires special removal tools like a siphon and often has serious damage to the area.
CATEGORIES OF WATER
Water is different from damage. Water category refers to the water itself separate from the damage. There are three categories.
CATEGORY ONE – There is very little risk for sickness from contact, ingestion or the like. This does not mean the water will stay this way, so cleaning it is important.
CATEGORY TWO – Significant contamination is present. Water has the potential to make you sick via ingestion. There may be microorganisms and/or organic and inorganic material in the water.
CATEGORY THREE – This is dangerous water. There are certain harmful pathogens, toxins and more in the water that will certainly cause serious sickness.
